Couchiching Brewery

4.8% Alcohol

Couchiching Brewery is in Orillia, on the shores of Lake Couchiching. Couchiching is derived from the Ojibwe word meaning “inlet”. In addition to Couchiching Brewery and Lake Couchiching, also in the area are Couchiching Inn, Couchiching Golf & Country Club, Couchiching Heights Public High School, Couchiching Lakeside Retreat, Camp Couchiching, Couchiching Beach Park, none of which are to be confused with Couchiching First Nations, which is located at Fort Frances which is west of Thunder Bay and no where near Orillia.

This brew poured like a summertime sunshine sketch of a little town*, bright and bubbly with next to no head. A very light malt aroma. A nice malt bread flavour, no bitters or hops, very mellow. A sweet finish.  A honey blonde? As it warmed a bit the sweet finish became more evident. A very enjoyable, mellow and easy drinking blonde ale.

*Editor’s Comment: “Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town” is a series of stories by Stephen Leacock, first published in 1912. It is a classic of Canadian humorous literature. The fictional setting for these stories is Mariposa, a small town on the shore of Lake Wissanotti, which is drawn to some extent from his experiences in living near and summering in Orillia, Ontario.

Editor's Comment: The good folks at Couchiching tell us that they won a 2021 Ontario Brewing Award for this beer and it is their first in the LCBO. Congratulations.
