Hop Bomb?

Dead Man's Switch

Lake of the Woods Brewing Co.

6.8% Alcohol

I always thought a dead man’s switch, apart from being an outdated and politically incorrect gender specific term, was designed to shut down a machine if the operator dies or passes out. I am not sure what it has to do with a clothespin, let alone a beer. They say the beer immortalizes the Kenora bank robbery of 1973? According to the can, this beer is best consumed while doing laundry, hence the clothespin? I will leave it to our editor to figure all of this out.

Nice pour, looking good, noticeably hazy. A faint fruity aroma coupled with hoppiness. This had me worried as I am not a fruity beer fan. However the fruit in the taste is somewhat subdued and faint, enough to notice but not enough to distract. It is hoppy, no doubt about it, they describe it as a “hazy hop bomb”, but I didn’t find it too hoppy. It all came together as relatively easy drinking for a strong IPA, and definitely refreshing. Very enjoyable.

*Editor’s Comment: According to Wikipedia, on May 10, 1973 a man wearing a black balaclava mask entered the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce in Kenora armed with a rifle, a pistol and a homemade bomb consisting of six sticks of dynamite. He held a dead man's switch in his teeth to detonate the bomb. As the robber left the bank with a duffle bag full of money a police sniper shot the robber triggering the bomb and killing the bomber. The street was showered with over $100,000 of cash, virtually all of which was returned. The robber has never been identified. Lake of the Woods say that this event, much like the reopening of the Lake of the Woods Brewery, has helped put Kenora on the map. Perhaps there is also some oblique reference to their beer as a “hop bomb” in all of this? I still haven’t figured out the laundry reference.

Editor's Comment: Our friends at Lake of the Woods tell us that clothes pins are known to be used as an integral part of a dead man's switch such as the one in the aforementioned bank robbery.
