White stout, what will they think of next? Brewed without roasted malts, but with lots of coffee, vanilla and lactose. You won’t be surprised to hear this is not your typical stout. First of all I had to figure out what the name of the beer is. Bold text on the front of the can says “It Won’t be Long Now” with angels falling from the heavens? On the side of the can the name Guilty Remnant is placed.
Very light golden, not white but not far off. Very substantial white head, The aroma is light with a touch of stout in there with coffee and vanilla vapours. First swig and the word sweet immediately comes to mind. Chocolate (coffee and lactose combining?) and vanilla, with the vanilla front and center. The lactose and vanilla must be combining to sweeten it and with the coffee and chocolate notes in the background. If the vanilla wasn’t so dominant this would be a complex beer. As I continued the tasting the coffee steps up a bit but the vanilla never steps back. Very sweet. An unbalanced brew, the coffee flavour was OK, the vanilla too sweet. It became harder to drink as time went on.
Jackie Gleason’s catch phrase back in the day was “How sweet it is.” He was referring to life. These days the expression has just been shortened to “Sweet” to denote something pleasing. I would echo Gleason’s mantra when referring to this beer, but in this case the expression is literal, not figurative.
This beer may appeal to some, I know my old buddy RA likes some exotic blends but this one is just too darn sweet for me.
