Depeche Mode Memento Mori. **
Memento Mori sounded like a souvenir from New Zealand to me,* but I figured that probably wasn’t right. I checked with the COMDB Translation Department and in their short and not so sweet manner they said “We don’t do Latin”. Latin, eh. Time to give our egghead Editor a call, he does Latin like nobody’s business.
Me: How is it going?
Editor: Great, I got Wordle in two today.
Me: I’m sure that was a fist pump moment for you. I need a Latin translation. What does “memento mori” mean?
Editor: Memento Mori is an ancient trope that means “remember, you must die”.
Me: Wow, thanks for that, Debbie Downer.
Editor: No, it’s meant to remind us that life is short so live it to the fullest. Like “Carpe Diem”, seize the day.
Me: Why didn’t they just call this beer “Carpe Diem” then?
Editor: Then the skull artwork on the can would make no sense.
Me: Just like you.
Call it what you will, which is exactly what Indie Alehouse did, it’s an oatmeal stout and that’s good news. As for me, I like an oatmeal stout as much as the next guy, as long as the next guy loves an oatmeal stout. Time to pour and score this stoic stout and see if it’s to die for.
It pours as dark as death, but much better to look forward to. In fact, I’m dying to try it. Some Java on the nose to go with this classic roast toast. First taste is cocoa sweet and oat smooth, the cocoa is with some subtle caffeine and well balanced. The cocoa and coffee combine for an almost dark berry flavour, almost. It all comes together very nicely.
This brew is so tasty it lets you forget about your own mortality for a moment, and just enjoy the moment. That moment being a Memento Mori.
