Tennent’s 1885 Lager

Wellpark Brewery

5% Alcohol

Is it a Lager or is it a Pilsner? On the can it claims to be both a Scottish (not Scotch) Lager and a Noble Pilsner. And it’s Bellpark Brewery so who is this Tennent who has their name on the can? Wellpark has been brewing beer out of Glasgow since 1556 so what does the 1885 mean?

A 500ml can, which is always appreciated. Stretching your drinking dollar may well have been invented by the Scots, who have a reputation for being thrifty. I think Farmer Steve may be Scottish to a fault. How cheap is he? Well I heard he is still shaving with his first razor blade.

Nice bright golden pour with a thin white tam on top. Fresh aroma with a touch of malt in the mix. First swig, very nice. Refreshing, easy drinking lager, with light malt overtones. Clean finish, no aftertaste to speak of or bitter. I didn’t find it hoppy or fruity despite Wellpark describing it on the can as “Fruity with Hoppy Touches”.  Easy drinking, good flavour, very refreshing.

Scottish Lager, Noble Pilsner, whatever this beer is its very good.

Editor’s Comment: A pilsner is a type of lager originating from the Czech Republic, this brew was modeled after German pilsners. Robert Tennent established his artisanal brewery in Glasgow in 1556. The Tennent family had been through 7 generations of family brewing when Wellpark Brewery was born in 1769. Tennent’s Lager, modeled after the German beers of the day, was first produced in 1885. Five minutes of research, identity crisis averted.
