On the lake again this evening, feeding the fishes. No fat bass-tards landed, but a couple of little bass-turds that got thrown back as quickly as an icy IPA after mowing the lawn on a walk-on-the-sun scorcher of an afternoon. Successful or not, every fishing expedition earns me a frosty cold one and tonight’s foray, although not exceptional, was no exception. A Petes was the light in my beer fridge tonight.
To be clear, it is Petes. No apostrophe utilized or required as this is a reference to the Peterborough Petes, the defending OHL Champions and Bobcaygeon’s hometown hockey team. Congratulations to the Petes. Cheers and beers go hand in hand when it comes to hockey, or most other sports come to think of it.*
My Petes is poured and I must say, this is one damn clear beer. A light lager mild malt nose. Cheers, it’s malt and slightly harsh bitters right off the first face off. Not as smooth or easy drinking as I would hope for with a light beer. Has this one been in the beer fridge a while?** Looks like they were going for crisp and got that harsh bitter instead. Now the bitters have given way to a mild malt with a slight fruit sweet finish, easy light and refreshing. A big swig (couldn’t resist) reintroduced the bitters, which is too bad, I was just getting use to a light bitterless easy drinker. The bitters aren’t the end of the world or even close to it, but all was right in the world with this light for a minute or two. Maybe smaller swigs will lighten the mood.
Unfortunately I couldn’t recapture that fleeting light lager highlight and instead dealt with the bitterness of unwanted acerbic bitters for most of this brew. Too bad. No reflection on the Petes, the OHL’s best, but this Petes is not Bobcaygeon’s best.
