Just passing through for another downtown K-Town brew review. Look out, there’s Something is in the Water! Could it be a frighteningly real mechanical shark, a modern day Moby Dick? Or Jaqueline Bisset in her scuba gear? Or Hasselhoff and Anderson saving another struggling swimmer?* Nope, none of the above. It’s just malted barley, wheat, oats and hops. But not just any hops, Wolfe Island hops! Farmer Steve has a retreat on the island, and rumour has it he has a tractor out there too. I wonder what his down home on the farm Kubota thinks of his “tractor on the side”.
Wolfe Island is a long way from California** in more ways than ten. But the Something in the Water team is living by their motto of drinking curiously with this uncommon Common. Hoping for a nice quaff while reading “The Idiot”, which I picked up because I thought it was the unauthorized bio of our Editor.***
A characteristically Common caramel coloured pour. Whisps of a steam like head for this esteemed steam beer. Aroma is a mix of fruit and caramel. Smells like a fall fair, toffee apples that is, not the livestock area. A creamy pour precludes a smooth mouthfeel with a malt caramel body followed by a bitter finish. Definitely an easy drinker, big swigs welcome, encouraged and indulged. Super easy body but just as you are thinking how smooth and easy this brew is, just enough bitter on the finish kicks in to make for a nice well balanced contrast.
