Jam up the mash, brothers and sisters!

While Brother Kramer shredded his axe, Brother Tyner shredded his vocal chords while imploring the crowd to “kick out the jams, motherfuckers”. * In a classic and necessary radio edit, the intro to that MC5 song that ended up on the airwaves was “kick out the jams, brothers and sisters”.  But no radio edit required for this Collective Arts sour when they tell us to Jam Up the Mash. They don’t instruct us where to jam it up, which is quite possibly why no radio edit is required? Free speech has its place, but us COM are much more interested in free beer.

I soured on sours after my first sour, but I decided after that pucker up to suck it up buttercup and try a few more. I saw it as an obligation as a serious suds sampler to seek out variety. And lo and behold I began to acquire a taste for tasty ones. Nasty ones, not so much. Which begs the question, which one is this one?

A golden haze with some bubbles culminating in a slim trim head of froth. It’s a sour stone fruit mash on the nose. First taste yields a watery mouthfeel, with middlin’ juice to a fizzy sour tang and a flat finish and aftertaste. Not as juicy, or as sour, as I thought it might be. The tang and sour settle slightly for a bit for the old juice to funk routine. It is nicely balanced, an easy drinking refresher. It’s mild not wild, tame not lame. Not an intense nonsense pucker up sour, but a just the way I like it sour.

Tasty, not nasty. I wish this could have been my first sour.

*Editor’s Comment: The 1969 MC5 live album version of Kick Out the Jams includes the profane intro by vocalist Rob Tyner, as does the recently released album MC50. The song has been covered by many groups over the years including Blue Oyster Cult, Pearl Jam, Rage Against the Machine. This year Suzi Quatro together with Alice Cooper recorded their own version.
