Lager and Lime Make for a Prickly Pair

Cerveza Baronesa

Gateway City Brewery

4.4% Alcohol

Someone should tell the Baronesa if she goes cavorting naked through the cactus grove picking limes she could end up with a prickly pair!* Contessa, Baronesa, Lady Gaga. The titles always confused me, most likely because I am no peer of peerage.**  I did meet a British Lord once, a funny old chap who had imbibed in one or two champagne cocktails and had some ribald tales to tell.

This Mexican Baronesa with the hops in her hair has harvested lots of lime from the prickly pear patch for her pale limey lager. And Gateway is harvesting proceeds from this beer to support the Beer Baroness Society Scholarship Fund! Sounds like some future Grand Dames Sipping Suds to me.

This brew pours apple juice golden and clearly clear, as clear as can be and then some. An aroma of lime, lots of lime, super lime. First swig is a lime fest, lots of lime and a little bit of malt, with a touch of the prickly pear melon to take the edge off the lime for a second or two. Lime, malt, LIME, melon repeat. A touch of bitter at the end from the lime rind, the zest as they say in culinary school. Once I accept the lime is in the limelight, I take big swigs. It is more lime that I am used to, but it is easy drinking once you are a-lime-atized. Less lime would’ve have been sublime. There is lots of lime but somewhere in there is a very easy drinking smooth Mexican style lager.

Lots of lime and a little lager make for a prickly pair. A little less lime in the lager would be lovely. As one of those Lords or Ladies might say, Blimey, it’s limey.

*Editor’s Comment: Sounds like the voice of experience.

**Editor’s Comment: From highest rank to lowest in British peerage; Duke or Duchess, Marquess or Marchioness, Earl (or Count) and Countess, Viscounts or Viscountess, Baron or Baroness. Any member of the peerage can be referred to as a Lord or Lady.

***Editor’s Comment: Limelight was a type of stage lighting, predecessor to the electric spotlight. A Flame of oxygen, hydrogen and quicklime creates a very bright light. Thomas Drummond turned the phenomena into a useful invention in 1826. The lights were used on stage to feature an main act or soliloquy, hence the term “in the limelight”.
