A brunch brew for the Crownsmen crew on another thirsty Thursday show. We didn’t solve many of the pressing problems the world faces today, unlike our usual shows. Our keen observations, amazing insights and implementable solutions are usually driven by 5% plus alcohol content. We determined that on today’s show we came up short in both volume and alcohol by volume with this stubby 355ml IBU 35, 3.5% ABV * light IPA from Steam Works. So light, easy drinking and crushable that we barely noticed we were day drinking, and next thing you know there it was gone. We ran out of Steam. It turns out that, contrary to popular belief, less is not more.
A hazy light, some would say pale, lemony pour, any head left with the 3% of alcohol MIA. A sprite like aroma without the bubbles, citrus lemon, maybe lime too? The taste is very light, a watery body with a lemony limey citrus flavour and no hops, bitters or any other features that would identify this as an IPA. It is a session light so that is to be expected but a bit of bitters or bite, would have perked up this ever so bashful brewski.
Less than an IPA by half and in this case, less is not more. When all was said and done, this brew was done way before then. Easy drinking, refreshing, definitely crushable. Ideal for those that don’t want their beer to get in the way of their drinking.
Steamworks call this one “IPA’s angelic little sibling”, which in my vernacular is “the rugrat that spoiled IPA’s chances at being an only child”. That’s just me accentuating reality over the positive.
An OK session light IPA if that is your thing.
