Bright lights, big city, but if the flash and dash frenetic pace of downtown little apple has you heading for a break down I have the cure. It’s a 220 King Street West step down to a down to earth bar to mellow down and down a cold one before a meltdown. Mascot invites us out of the light and into the darkness for some happy hour day drinking with any brewer’s favourite oxymoron, a light dark.
Entering Mascot’s self proclaimed “chillest craft brewery” is a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of all the movers and shakers trying to set the world on fire with their crabs in the bucket approach to climbing the proverbial ladder for no other reason than just to look down on the rest of us. Not for me, thank you very much. I haven’t seen it all, but I’ve seen enough. The Bond merchants may be looking for a view to a kill, but the brew in my hand is my licence to chill.
A dark bordering but not quite black pour, the barkeep draws just the right amount of froth. I do adore a pro pour. The classic roast malt aroma, cocoa too, all light and inviting. A great roasted malt cocoa taste with no real bitters, for a super easy drinking draft. As I was drinking this tasty dark light I thought to myself what anyone would, “can I finish this one in time to get a second while it’s still happy hour”. I checked my watch, only to remember I haven’t worn a watch in 10 years. I checked my phone, and as old Mick would tell you, time was on my side, yes it was. *
A very easy drinking dark, full flavoured for a light, and well balanced too. Well done Mascot, a chill swill for sure.
