This brew is in partnership with the Niagara River Lions. Not familiar with the Lions are you? Perhaps a local rowing team? Or are they masting the jibs and tucking the sails for a regatta? Or maybe a synchronized swimming squad? Wrong on all counts. They are a Canadian Professional Basketball team.
I know what you’re thinking. Since the demise of the Vancouver Grizzlies, aren’t the Raptors Canada’s only professional basketball team. Incorrect! The CEBL (Canadian Elite Basketball League), Canada’s professional basketball league, has a number of interesting team names. How about the Brampton Honey Badgers. Or the landlocked Winnipeg Sea Bears.*
Dragan**, their spelling not mine even though they have a dragon as their logo, has brewed this beer ”The Hunt” in partnership with the CEBL? Not sure what the basketball league provided, hops maybe? Not the first brew we reviewed of a brew brewed to support a crew. Petes Lager comes to mind, not Pete’s but Petes. Or Mill Street’s tribute to the Blue Jays, their Blue Wave. How about a tribute to the 1972 Canada cup winning team, 72 Canada. None of those stalwart team supporters achieved super suds status unfortunately.
And it just so happens that the River Lions are in the hunt, first in their division and the league this year, the elite of the elite league! Well done. Let’s see if this beer is in the hunt for the elite of the COMDB legion of lager.
No shortage of foam on this cheer beer, an off white heads up play. A darker pale, bordering on amber but that’s where the resemblance ends. A muted aroma of malt and fruit, a mixed bag. First taste is mild malt with fruit and bitters, a nice balanced pull right off the tip off. Instead of fading the bitters became less pronounced but sharper and more biting. It just seems like rather than any particular flavour differentiating itself the malt and various fruits all blend in for a bit of a mish mash malt mixup. An ok brew. Go Lions go.
