Harvest Ale

MacKinnon Brothers Brewing Co.

5% Alcohol

Moving day and I’m not talking about Saturday at a PGA tournament,* I’m talking about packing up kit and kaboodle and heading on down the road. Well, once that big ass moving truck was loaded I thought it was my turn. Alas, permission to get loaded was not granted by the Department of Morality who reminded me that after the loading, the next day is the unloading, which she explained will require both my sense and sensibility, the two being somewhat in short supply at the best of times. Getting unloaded sounds like a moving day hangover to me. Instead of loaded it was one and done so I was really hoping for a good one.

If the MacKinnon Brothers were a music group they would be country or western band, or maybe country and western band. And I would be playing their new hit single “Harvest Ale” from their debut album “Down on the Farm”.  It’s not their first hit, I remember “Red Fox” was a real chart topper on the COMDB top 40. It’s not our first harvest ale either. These days and at this age we don’t get too many “firsts” anymore.

They tell us that this brew was “100% grown on our farm”, so sounds like we are sampling some home grown tonight! ** A fields of gold pour ***which I suspect would be reminiscent of a harvest if I knew anything about farming, which I don’t. A field fresh malt fruit tandem on the nose. It is an easy drinking refreshing mild fruit and malt with a touch of ale bitters to back it up.  A great ale, easy drinking and refreshing. Mainly grainly, a harvest barfest. A farm fresh refresh.

*Editor’s Comment: The Professional Golf Association tournaments are four rounds of golf over four days. The third day of the tournament is typically referred to as moving day, where you attempt to move up onto the leader board and place yourself in contention and in a strong position for the final day of play.

**Editor’s Comment: “Home Grown” is the 40th studio album from Neil Young. It is a collection of songs originally recorded in 1974 and 1975. The album was finally released in 2020. “Home Grown” is also a 2015 song by the Zac Brown Band from their “Jekyll + Hyde” album. It was a number one hit for them on the Billboard Country charts. Not sure how it did on the western charts.

***Editor’s Comment: “Fields of Gold” is a 1993 song written and recorded by Sting for his album “Ten Summoner’s Tales”. It is neither country nor western. The song is about fields of barley so perhaps it is a fitting background tune to a beer tasting.

Final Rating: A Home Grown 17 out of 20
