Loco for Franco

Franco

Microbrasserie Cassel Brewery

4.2% Alcohol

Cassel Brewery* is nestled in the small town of Casselman in Ontario between Ottawa and Montreal. A bastion of French speaking in Ontario, 79.3% of the population of 3,960 have French as their first language.** The Via rail train station is a focal point of the small town, which I assume is the motive for the locomotive motif logo. A loco for Franco, which seems to be an obvious short form for Francophone. I think I will give the COMDB translation department the day off today (with pay of course).

In Canada if you have an ABV between 2.6% up to 4% you can call yourself a light beer. Coming in at 4.2%, this lager is not light by any stretch of the imagination or ABV. Franco tastes great, I like it! Do I always need to explain why? Ok, now I’ve got the Editor on my case. He is telling me that as a beer reviewer that’s my job, to explain why. So, here’s your review.

It pours a nice golden clear as clear can be, with no head whatsoever to interrupt it’s clarity. An aroma of malt with a mild hop backbone, a lager body with a pilsner presence. It’s got a fresh full bodied malt taste with a slight hoppy brisk finish. A very slight sweet in there too. Shifting into big swig mode now. Why? Because it’s so damn tasty, and easy drinking to boot.

A fridge stocking candidate for sure. Look, it’s like this. Relatively low ABV but lots of flavour, and just like the Blue Jays it has a finisher that seals the deal. As far as I’m concerned, this train could keep rolling all night long.

Our old buddy JSF tells us that sharing is caring, but I don’t really care to share this tasty lager with anyone.

*Editor’s Comment: Cassel Brewery are consolidating with another Ontario Francophone brewer, Brasserie Tuque de Brue located in Embrun, just a stone’s throw to the West from Casselman.

**Editor’s Comment: A number of towns in Ontario are predominantly French speaking. West Nipissing, Smooth Rock Falls, Moonbeam, Kapuskasing, Hearst, Hawkesbury, French River, Alfred & Plantagenet. Despite it’s proximity to Quebec, Ottawa only has 13% of it’s population with French as a first language. 4.7% of Ontario’s population have French as their first language.

***Editor’s Comment: This being a beer review, the essence of which is to explain what a beer tastes like to readers, the answer is yes, you do have to explain why.
