When it comes to ” before the dawn” no problem. I sampled this dark, dry and mysterious porter about 10 hours before the dawn. If Lake of Bays is implying “just before the dawn” * that’s a bit early for me to blow off some froth, the only thing I’m doing then is trying to get back to sleep. Of course back in the day we on occasion drove that bus all night long, celebrating the achievement with some sunrise suds. But an all-nighter these days is when I don’t have to get up to take a piss.
This purposeful porter poured way before the dawn dark, brimstone black and substantial. An aroma of roasted malt and a touch of blackberry sends a serious suds statement. First taste is an accessible roasted malt somewhere between porter and dark lager, with a flat dry finish. We’re talkin’ dry here, as in rolling sage brush dry. And the dry isn’t exactly the finish but actually begins half way through the roasted malt.
Not many porters are big swiggers but this one checks the box. The malt body is smooth, no bite there or in the finish which is flat and dry rather than crisp. Nice sequence and balanced too.
As far as when to drink this brew, anytime before or after the dawn sounds good to me.
