Downtown in the little apple, bright lights big city. The GTA, driving a Dodge into the land of Ford. Where rush hour starts early and ends late, and the wind is always in your face no matter which way you turn*.
Dining at a real Italian restaurant, no kids menu, and old waiters that have popped a cork or two in their day. Red or white they ask. Do you have any beer I ask. Birra, big smile, but of course sir, perhaps an Italian beer for you? A Peroni, a Moretti? The later please. He pours a few fingers of Moretti into my glass, leaving the bottle to my own devices. “Mucho grazie” I reply, quite proud of my firm grasp of the Italian language. I am quite possibly the only person in the restaurant not sipping something red or white, but when I am out on the town I have this strange habit of ordering something I actually enjoy.
It used to be called just Birra Moretti then Heineken got a hold of it in 1996 and in 2015 introduced six new Moretti brews including two radlers. I wonder what old Luigi Moretti would have thought of a Moretti Radler, not too much I would venture. So I guess after this diversification they had to rename the original Moretti L’Authentica. You may have noticed I haven’t been engaging the COMDB translation department in this review, it turns out they are in a bit of a snit. I am happy to say it wasn’t me that pissed them off this time but our egghead editor. It turns out in a recent review he translated “Bonspiel”, so by doing Dutch without them, now he is in Dutch** with them.
What about old Luigi’s cerveza. A nice light crystal clear pour with a few bubbles. I poured myself a near perfecto head of lager into that pilsner glass. Light and fresh malt aroma. A light malt refreshing taste with a smooth crisp finish. Nice and chilly, very good, very refreshing. I really enjoyed this classic Italian lager. It goes great with anything, including me. Red or White… not tonight, but I’m ready for a Morretti. I know a bit of a stretch on the rhyme, I might have to show the editor my poetic license.
