I’m a big fan of Woodhouse Brewing. For this old man a woodie in the hand can’t be beat.* So to tap into a Woodie Double IPA on the big game night seemed to be the way to go. Unfortunately even though a Woodhouse beer can’t be beat, my Leafs can. Again and again. Yes, the Buds are in dire straits and we aren’t talking about singing backup in a Knopfler brothers band, although once again the cup is “so far away”.** One game away from elimination seems like the right time for a died in the blue, long term loyal fan of the Leafs to consider Plan B. Go Oilers Go!
A double IPA with a bold big hop flavour is what they tell us, and they ain’t lyin’. A golden slightly hazy tinge of ruby red pour with light bright white head, which is the only thing light about this beer. Getting ahead of myself. It is hop forward on the nose, a hoppy pine forest in my glass. I could hang a can from the rearview mirror as my truck air freshener.***
A taste of strong pine bitters, heavy hops going down here. A tasty fruit body and the finish. Hop heavy so not balanced, not yet anyway. It could evolve, it could devolve. The hoppy pine is stronger than the fruit, but it is a double so no surprise there. This IPA is like the playoffs, not a place for rookies or tenderfoots, although the Leafs’ backup goalie did OK last night. Must have been a cloudy night because the “stars” were no where to be seen. As I work my way down the glass, although I wouldn’t call it work because I am enjoying this brew, the bitters abate a bit but still have a strong presence. A solid kick ass double woodie knocking on the super suds door, I think I’ll let it in.
