JF experiencing Quadrophenia.

With JT on the February wagon it’s up to the rest of us cranky old men to pick up the slack so to speak. And after this high voltage Mohawp triple you may be picking up the Slack. JF has done his part, quaffing a quad the other night. I told the COM that I was trying a triple on for size, that a quad was one toke over the line for me. To which Fonger replied “There is no line, that’s an urban myth.” Tell Brewer and Shipley that. * By the way, am I the only one that finds it ironic, or fitting, that the song “One Toke Over the Line” was a one hit wonder?

Big Rig’s barber has been trying to even up the sideburns and the result is a high and mighty mohawk. Mohawk, Mohawp, more hops. Now were at the hop. “You can swing it, you can groove it, you can really start to move it at the hop.”**

I always approach a triple with a combination of intimidation, trepidation and anticipation. Some are a touch too much. Occasionally we need a triple bypass to survive one. But us COM seem to have a lot of lessons unlearned, one more wouldn’t hurt, would it? Maybe I’m here again because occasionally we do find a super suds triple. It’s time for a quaff off.

Once I popped the top, the war of the hops spilled out onto my table, so eager it was to make an impression. Bursting with hops, flavour and carbonation. A dark golden orange peachy pour, with a bleached white mohawk on that shiny skull. Juicy hoppy on the nose, no shy guy this one. The taste has lotsa juice, citrus mango, with some funk and a boozy aftertaste. Very tropical juicy, strong but not yet overbearing.  Almost puree juicy but not quite, almost boozy but not quite. They just keep this triple within the realm of respectability. I’m in the no big swig zone.  High strung but not unbalanced.

Socks knocked off.

When all was said and done both this beer and I were. I think this barber has given up on the mohawk, at 10.3% I’m getting a buzz here.  Maybe a Mohawp is just a mohawk with a buzz? One and done takes on a new meaning, as in one and done like dinner.

After all that, and then some, I liked it. About as close to an accessible triple as you’ll ever get.

*Editor’s Comment: The 1971 hit song “One Toke Over the Line” by Brewer & Shipley was quite controversial at that time, as you can imagine. For some that did not realize the reference to marijuana, the lines "Waitin' for the train to come home, sweet Mary" and "One toke over the line, sweet Jesus" were seen as gospel and the song was actually performed on the Lawrence Welk Show.

**Editor’s Comment: Danny and the Juniors had a big hit in 1958 with “At the Hop”, written by Singer, Medora and White. Dick Clark would not play the song on American Bandstand unless he received half the publishing proceeds. By the time the 1960 Payola hearings were underway Clark had already sold his rights to the song. Sha Na Na performed it at Woodstock in 1969. The Flash Cadillac and the Continentals' cover was on the soundtrack of the movie American Graffiti.
