Murphy's Stout

John Smith's Brewery

4.1% Alcohol

So this is an International brew or is it. Only 440ml, what’s that all about, where is my 500ml international beer? I thought it was Irish, but I didn’t read the fine print.  British! With a name like Murphy’s, I just assumed. What kind of a Brit has the name Murphy? A British alternative to Guinness but they want people to think it is Irish?  A well known saying is that “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery”  but a lot of people don’t reference the full quote from Oscar Wilde. It goes like this “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery that mediocrity can pay to greatness.”   That is exactly what is going on here.

This stout has a creamy pour that transforms into a nice dark body and tan head but that is where the similarity to a Guinness ends. This could be called Irish Stout Lite, except it is British. They would have to call it Irish Style Stout Lite. A decent enough flavor but the texture is more watery than a real Irish stout, which made it a less enjoyable quaff.  Why have a watery imitation when you can have the real thing? Not on my list of future beer fridge fodder for sure.
