Having a fireside chat with a Square Nail Pale Ale. Crankin’ up the wattage at the cottage. Today square nails are what manicurists do. But way back in the day, when there were square nails and snail mail, I remember as a kid building the cabin down by the lake with the old man. I was doing the whack a mole hammer and nail show and the old man said to me “You hammer like lightning” and I’m thinking I’m doing pretty good, then he says “You never strike the same place twice.” My carpentry skills have not evolved much since that time, but that’s another story.
This Publican* House pale ale pours clear golden angling a bit towards amberesque. Not much of a head on this nail. It smells juicy. I’m intrigued. It comes on strong with grapefruit bitters up front with some malt in the middle and mild juice in the caboose, a slight grapefruit zing aftertaste . It has a nice one two grapefruit zing bitter punch bookending the malt body. The disparate flavours in sequence all balance and work well together. A very good pale ale.
