New Year’s Nostalgia with a Noctalgia

Noctalgia

Trestle Brewing Company

5% Alcohol

Back in the day midnight was the midpoint of our New Year’s Eve celebrations and libations. These days it’s Scattegories with the grandkids then one and done to fuel the sheer fortitude required to stay up until midnight. So picking my New Year’s eve brewski was a serious suds selection. I thought Nostalgia seemed like a great brew for some 2025 reminiscing of the year that was and could have been. Upon further examination it appears I was quaffing a Noctalgia.  What the hell is a Noctalgia you may well be wondering, perhaps with the mild expletive deleted.

Read all about it.

Maybe Nocturnal Nostalgia refers to dark brews, cocoa stouts of the past ? Bitter sweet memories are made of these. But no, Trestle has provided us with a QR code, which I learned how to use from the grandkids Christmas wish list. Apparently Noctalgia* is another one of those made up words, like “beerme” only less useful. It means “sky grief”, a condition that astronomer’s get when the city lights make their night sky an unholy glow, leaving them in consternation about the constellations. Turning the great bear into the great blur, and searching for “where did he go” Leo. In case you were looking for Sagittarius it’s on the can courtesy of a NASA hubble space pic.

This dark lager pours cottage country night sky dark, a slim cloudy head to top things off. A dark roast Cola sweet aroma, hopefully this is the real thing too. Lager roast malt sweet with bitters in an ideal sequence and as balanced as a banker’s budget. Full flavoured and easy drinking, the bitters light enough for some big swiggin’. Beating the grandkids in Scattergories was sweet, but this tasty dark lager made my night. A great start to 2026. Happy cranky old new year.

Happy New Year

*Editor’s Comment: The word Noctalgia combines the Latin word "noctis" meaning night, and "algia" the Greek word for grief or pain.
