Seems like it’s been raining for three days solid. If I wanted this weather I would have moved to Vancouver years ago. Farmer Steve might be welcoming this drenching, but not me. Time to check out the beer fridge and see what temptations are lurking there. Shade, a Black IPA seems like the right choice to match my mood. The folks at 555 didn’t blow the budget on a label that’s for sure.* I consider this a good sign, I like brewers that spend most of their energy on the beer and not on marketing and crazy, artistic labels.
This beer pours nicely with a deep dark shade of black and a decent head. The taste is rich with woody overtones and a distinct bitterness that pairs very well with my mood. I saw 6.5% and 60 IBU and kind of thought I might be in for a sensory overload with hops and tannins running riot in my mouth. But this brew is surprisingly smooth and the taste is like a rich IPA. The taste is not a sharp as some high-test brews and I found it very drinkable. You still feel like you are having an IPA despite your eyes trying to convince you that this is a porter or a stout.
There’s a lot of unique brewers in Prince Edward County and I may have to round up a posse of Cranky Old Men ** and make a tour of the region to make sure we don’t miss any hidden gems there.
