After a challenging brew or two, a Christmas doublebock shock to the system, and an uncharacteristic SC IPA, I thought it was time to play it safe and get back to basics with a righteous red. Playing it safe never made anyone a winner but I’m sure it prevented quite a few people from losing big. Enter True North Brewing, Magnotta’s (yes the winery) brewing division located out of Vaughn. Not exactly what I would call a “near the North Pole” location. North of Toronto and not much else actually. The only Aurora you will see from Vaughn is the highway sign for Aurora Ontario which is actually North of Vaughn. No sundogs down their way either, although they are North of the Niagara Ice Dogs. But they are North of many places, that much is true.
A grainy toffee malt aroma, light and sweet. First taste follows suit, a watery mouthfeel with a sweet toffee malt and slightly grainy finish. The word mediocre comes to mind. As weak as it was it didn’t have the will to evolve. An OK quaff, but not the super suds sampling I was hoping for.
