Farmer Steve is no Irishman but he can make a Scotsman look like a big spender. His favourite Irish toast is “May it always be the other guy who says “the drinks on me”.

Turn it up, turn it up, little bit higher, radio. Turn it up, that’s enough, so you know it’s got soul.

But when it comes to real Irishmen, Bono still hasn’t found what he’s looking for. I suspect he’ll find it in the last place he looks. And Oscar practiced moderation in moderation. But my favourite Irishman is Van the Man. Van Morrison’s iconic performance in The Last Waltz stole the show. * And to top it all off, he introduced us to the mic drop! **

Now Ganaraska is introducing us to not just any Irishman, but The Irishman. Could this one be my new favourite? Just like the drunk that fell off his stool said “The bar is set pretty high.” Let’s see if this brew is the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow or a pretender to the throne.

A ruddy rich red head for sure, but headless. It has a strong almost porter like aroma to it, roasted malt. First taste is a substantial mouthfeel, a thick cocoa malt to hoppy combo. This isn’t your old man’s red. A roasted red toffee malt with a faint citrus hoppy in the mix. After first quaff it becomes thinner, but still very flavourful. I was on the fence as to whether to call this easy drinking or not. True died in the Irish wool red lovers may call it easy drinking but it’s flavourful bordering on aggressive. As Irish as Paddy’s pig, and very good too.

*Editor’s Comment: The 1987 song “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” by Irish band U2 was a number 1 hit in Ireland and the USA. Oscar Wilde famously said “Everything in moderation, including moderation”. Van Morrison’s front man performance of Caravan in the Scorsese movie The Last Waltz is one of the highlights of what many call the greatest rock movie ever.

**Editor’s Comment: Google tells us that Johnny Rotten of the Ramones “invented” the mic in 1977 but Van Morrison did at the end of performing his song “Caravan” in the 1976 concert with The Band that was recorded for The Last Waltz.
