New Westminster is 18kms from downtown Vancouver, or 1 hour and 15 minutes by cab at 4PM. And I thought Toronto traffic was bad (it is). What’s so special about New Westminster? It was the one-time capital of British Columbia, and the oldest Western Canadian city, so maybe special but not that new actually.* A name that made sense at the time. Maybe now it should be called Westminster? Just saying.
It is also the head office and main studio location of Crownsmen Partners where COMDB are participating in a rousing (as opposed to arousing) heavy industry talk and beer tasting videocast. A one-time Labatt Brewery location,** it is now the home to a much more interesting brewer and the subject of today’s review, Steel & Oak.
The after the show afterglow called for a dinner out. So, what’s the perfect beverage pairing with meatball, wings and olive dish appetizers and a pepperoni and a margarita pizza? The correct answer is it doesn’t matter, or as my grandson would say “it doesn’t care”. So, you know what you pair anything with that you don’t know what to pair it with? A beer, that’s what. Let’s hope this beer is smoother than this segue. And it is!
A deep dark pour with a tinge of ruby red emanating from the heart of the matter. A thin off-white head on this SOB (Steel and Oak beer). A malt with coca aroma, smells oh so good. Leonard Cohen knew that I want it darker.*** A watery lager mouthfeel with roasted malt and cocoa for a smooth patio cafe countenance. Well balanced roasted malt and cocoa. A delicious early evening dark with pizza on the patio. This dark lager is one damn fine SOB, excuse the language.
