Not So Pale Ale

Sierra Nevada Pale Ale

Sierra Nevada Brewing Co.

5.6% Alcohol

This not so pale ale pours a dark golden bordering on amber with a nice snowy white head on top of the mountain.** Fresh aroma with some citrus for our daily vitamin C intake. But there was no fruit in the first swig, it was a little hoppy and bitter, not too bitter but close. Too bad that fruit didn’t show up, it would have made a nice balanced ale. But wait! The fruit came out a bit near the end of my quaff as it warmed up a bit. I like an icy cold brew but perhaps there was some fruit and some balance hidden in the cold?

Not what I would describe as smooth, it has a bitter and slightly boozy finish which surprised me because it is not a high ABV brew. This is a good basic pale ale, nice flavour, some bitters, with a bit of citrus lying In wait.

*Editor’s Comment: Sierra Nevada has been brewing since 79 and is still privately owned. They describe themselves as a family business, “Family owned, operated and argued over.” At one time this beer was the best selling Pale Ale in the US. Still independent after all these years, that deserves a cheers.

**Editor’s Comment: There is a Sierra Nevada mountain range in Nevada. There also happens to be a Sierra Nevada mountain range in Spain. Wait a minute, there is also one in Colombia. It looks like there are a few of them in Chile as well. “Sierra Nevada” in Spanish translates to “snowy mountains”, so it’s no surprise that there are a few of them.
