I know nothing, NOTHING!
When it comes to German, the only words I learned in my youth were from Hogan’s Heroes. In other words “I know nothing, nothing!”* That’s one reason why the COMDB translation department gets so much work around Oktoberfest time. However, in this case Sawdust City has been good enough to do the translation for us, which has caused no end of consternation for the translation department. Our brewer tells us Sägemehl Stadt (pronounced “Zeg-a-meal St-tad-t”) roughly translates to Sawdust City. An SC Festbier and here we are festing once again , Prost.
What a great looking fest pour, the golden hue, the healthy foam-fest. In full festing form. A bit of foam on the nose, perhaps too eager to dive into this malty Märzen. A malty bready aroma, not a whole loaf, just a slice or two. First quaff is a malty grainy roasted full flavoured caramel with a bready body and a nice slight burnt bitter finish and aftertaste. Nice amber toffee but not smooth, instead full flavoured with that auburn burn ending of a nice bitters. Great balance, oh so important in this style. I may know nothing about most things (as I am frequently reminded on the home front) but I do know a thing or two about beer, and SC nailed it with this one.
Executive summary: Full amber flavour with mild bready body and a burnt mild bitter finish makes for a balanced diet of Märzen festbier, umlaut and all, and that I know.
