Nothingness Turns Out to be Quite Something

Return to Nothingness

Third Moon Brewery

6.5% Alcohol

How about these brew names; Return to Nothingness, Midnight Kills, Born to Die, and Dead Don’t Die (which seems contradictory to the previous beer name). Wow, some pretty morose monikers from these Third Moon guys. Maybe it’s just a phase they’re going through?*

Me on the other hand, when I start a tasting I’m a glass full kinda of guy. Part way through I’m a glass half full kinda guy and when I’m done I’m a ready for another glass full kinda guy. So I’m positive I’m positive in my crankiness.

Maybe time for a beer renaming party with some cheerier names. How about “Returning Empties for Cash” or “Midnight Swills”. Time to take a gamble on a name like “Born to Throw Die” for those of us with nothing to lose. Or let the zombies eat brains, and we can have our just desserts with a beer named “The Dead Don’t Eat Pie.” Use these beer names and watch suds sales soar. You’re welcome Third Moon.

This beer assumes we came from nothingness, which can’t be further from the truth. The COM all came from Kingston before they emanated and immigrated throughout the known universe. But we also know that if something came from nothing there had to be something there to begin with, not nothing. Billy Preston made it abundantly clear that nothing from nothing is nothing.** And this beer can, once I finish it, will be returned to the beer store for 10 cents, and that’s not much but it’s something. No writer’s block here, when it comes to discussing nothingness there’s nothing to it. But it’s tasting time. Yay!

An OJ with pulp pour, it’s not pulp but the oats that make it substantial. Sure looks juicy and bright. A tropical aroma, I’m catching some mango on the nose. It smells extra juicy, happy and hoppy. A nice bright white hopeful head. The first taste is middlin’ tropical juicy with a crisp grapefruit not over the top bitterness on the finish. Very tasty. The crisp bitterness grows  a bit. The juice switches over to bitters in balance without missing a beat and it works well. For such a sombre brew name it’s some happy hoppy suds.

*Editor’s Comment: The moon goes through 4 main phases, new moon, first quarter, full moon and last quarter, which is also known as third moon. So the 4th quarter is the third moon which is actually a half-moon. You would think that astrophysicists would be better at math.

**Editor’s Comment: Billy Preston’s 1974 hit song “Nothing from Nothing” topped the charts that year. He performed the song as the first musical guest performance on Saturday Night Live.
