If the Silversmith squirrels are looking for nuts, they sure came to the right beer. The squirrels around here are as large as NYC sewer rats and just as deferential, as in not. They remind me of those rascally rodents raiding the most spectacular bird feeder in the world, but that’s another story, literally.
Apparently nut allergies affect 1% of the population so the grandkids can’t take peanut butter and jam sandwiches to school these days, or nut brown ale for that matter. Back in the day there would have been some serious malnutrition problems, to go with all that second-hand smoke, if we couldn’t take PB&J to school, or a nut brown ale for that matter.
When it comes to nuts, I would rather see them as pairings than ingredients, and browns have had their ups and downs with me. Cashews are good news and pistachios out of the shell are swell, but hazelnuts exist further down the list. But I am a Silversmith fan, so let’s see what’s brewing.
Popped that top, not a tough nut to crack. A dark walnut brown clear pour, not hazelnut hazy. With a thin white shell of a head. A malt nut in tandem aroma. First taste is mildly nutty with the malt, and a slight bitter ale finish. It is certainly well balanced right out of the gate. A pretty consistent old English brown, start to finish, a nutty buddy. Not nuts about nuts and not my favourite type of brew but this one was OK.
