Just like all pilsners are lagers but not all lagers are pilsners, so to are all clementines tangerines but not all tangerines are clementines. * As far as a Christmas stocking full of clementines goes, I don’t have any childhood memories of such a fruitful sock hanging from the mantelpiece. It appears at Great Lakes this is a Bah Humbug memory, a somewhat Scrooge like recollection of Christmas past. Come to think of it, the song Oh My Darling Clementine is not too cheery a ditty either.** Regardless of the sentiment behind the name, Bud the Elf on the Beer Shelf climbed out from under the Mistle-toe to pick this one out as part of our Cranky Old Christmas Countdown.
A muted golden orange pour, with an orange citrusy aroma, no real hops or bitters on the nose. The first taste is a fizzy dry very citrus clementine to a dry flat slightly bitter and sweet finish. Although in sequence the tastes seem to be competing a bit. The taste quickly evolves into a more balanced citrus pale, still a dry finish and next to no bitters. It continues to evolve, this one is keeping me on my toes. An untart sour? It’s like the clementine was trying to make a name for itself but at some point realized the error of its ways and became a team player and toed the line.
It is an easy drinking, big swig taking, smile making pale. Wasn’t sure about this one at first but I guess I got into the Christmas spirits. Bud’s recommendation rings true, I could see the look on his face, he was saying “I toed you so.”
