Oh No, It’s The Jealous Mistress

The Jealous Mistress

Lock Street Brewery

6.7% Alcohol

I’m watching the Blue Jays and quaffing a pint, and the Department of Morality asks what I am up to and I tell her “ I am watching the game and having a Jealous Mistress.” Next thing I know the missus is taking the can away, with a stern look of disapproval at my poor explanation of the situation. Ain’t love grand! Let’s just say my relationship communication skills are a 40 year long work in progress. Luckily, thanks to the COMDB Guide to Beer Tasting I had already poured it, so no beer was lost in the exchange.

They say the law is a jealous mistress*, and so is this pint of English Ale from Lock Street. An English  Honey Brown Ale to be precise and one I was looking forward to. Beauty pour, dark lager dark with a nice thin white foam topper. A full malt dark lager aroma, it looks  great, smells great. First taste is a smoky full malt flavour approaching porter with a nice mouthfeel, delicious, and then a very sweet honey finish. Ballroom blitz sweet, sweet home Alabama sweet, and sweet Caroline sweet all in one**. I can only hope the sweet settles down a bit. Unfortunately it didn’t.

In baseball no matter how great a game you are playing you still have to close, you have to have a strong finish. In business you can make a great presentation but you still have to close the deal. In beer, you can have a great pour, aroma and taste, but the finish lingers, the finish stands out, the finish is remembered. This beer has great flavour, aroma and look but too much honey sweet on the finish for me.  It’s a shame because every other aspect of this brew is great. The honey browns that work do so because their sweet is subtle not striking.

*Editor’s Comment: On the can Lock Street says “Your jealous mistress requires long and constant courtship. The jealous mistress is not to be won by trifling favors, but with a lavish homage.” It looks like they borrowed this verbiage from the famous jealous mistress quote which actually refers to the law. It was stated in 1829 by USA Supreme Court Justice Joseph Story “(The law).. is a jealous mistress and requires long and constant courtship. It is not to be won by trifling favors, but by lavish homage.”

**Editor’s Comment: Sweet is a 70’s British glam rock band that had a number of charting hits including “Ballroom Blitz”, “Fox on the Run” and “Love is Like Oxygen”. The song “Sweet Home Alabama” is Lynrd Skynrd’s most successful song and from their 1974 “Second Helping” album. “Sweet Caroline” is a 1969 release from Neil Diamond and Elvis did a memorable cover of the song.
