Ever the contrarian, I was doing some daytime drinking with a Nocturne. Out for dinner with my wife for life and when I saw AquaNova on the menu, a Vienna Lager no less, I said yes, please. I ran into Brewmaster KC at the OCBA conference and since then I’ve been scanning shelves and menus for one of their brews.
Nocturne, a piece of art inspired by the night, a classy craft of a quaff if ever I heard one Sounds like downtown’s going uptown with a Nocturne going down tonight!
A copper-coloured caramel countenance, a nice fluffy white head, enough to be noticed but not to impede my first swig. A taste of malty caramel with some surprising bubble-gum sweet! A watery mouthfeel. It has a dry slightly bitter finish. The bubble-gum sweet makes way for a more traditional lager caramel sweet on the second swig with a nice light malt caramel to mild bitters sequence with a bit of carbonation, some fizz in the biz. A light tasty Vienna, easy drinking, the caramel carbonation and very mild bitters all in balance.
In an attempt to be as classy as a Nocturne, and also (mainly) due to the fact that the Department of Moderation was sitting directly across that table from me, I resisted the temptation to big swig this sucker. But I reckon it’s big swiggable. *
I would have had two if I wasn’t under adult supervision. After all, one good Nocturne deserves another.
