Wellington is inviting us to join them on Pleasant Island. Wouldn’t that be a nice respite on a cold night. But you might want to think twice before booking your flights to the island country of Nauru, formerly known as Pleasant Island. Nauru, population 12,500 is the second smallest country in the world by population, next to Vatican City. In terms of number one status, Nauru is known as the least visited country in the world with about 200 visitors a year.* Not exactly the island paradise pictured on the can or in our minds eye.
Let’s envisage another pleasant island, as opposed to the Pleasant Island. Ocean breeze, Beach Boys warmth of the sun,** the occasional squawk of a seagull, locals calling out “Special deal for Americans”, and in a hammock with a frosty adult beverage named for the moment.
A bright sunny golden island sunrise of a pour, hazy and lazy with a white lei around the neck of my beer glass. Tropical juicy aroma with some mild hops lurking in the tidal pools. A taste of very mild juice not as juicy as expected, it’s watery and very light with some grapefruit bitters. Everything mild so it is balanced. A light easy breezy brewski with a squeeze of grapefruit for a mildly bitter finish. Certainly refreshing, definitely crushable. The word pleasant comes to mind.
