If you’ve got peaks, that means you’ve got valleys too, just the way the world works. Although a lot of people are wondering just how does the world work these days. The way things have been going lately it seems like the earth is bi-polar. About all I have figured out is beer, and sometimes even that confounds me.

The Tuatara: A cranky old lizard eating hops.

As far as this beer goes Counterpart is taking us down to the land of the tuatara, the kiwi, the weka and the weta * with their Motueka hopped New Zealand pilsner.**  And they have penguins too! Not Counterpart, New Zealand.

Bringing this armchair flora and fauna adventure back to reality, Counterpart was part of our Niagara brew tour, located in Niagara Falls but not near the falls, no mists or tourists.

A clear and present but not effervescent pour, golden with a slim white head on the peaks. Can something smell crisp? If it can than this does. First taste was lager sweet with a floral body with a dry finish and slightly bitter aftertaste. Floral fades for fruit, and then is replaced with more bitters. The floral comes and goes, peaks and valleys. I kinda wish it would just go. The dry crisp finish crosses the line into acidic once or twice but never stays there.

A refresher, but I would stick with the peaks and skip the valleys and trade floral for fruit any day.

*Editor’s Comment: The tuatara lizard is a direct descendant to the dinosaurs and can live to an age of 100years. The kiwi is a flightless bird and the national symbol of New Zealand. The weta is a flightless insect and one of the largest and heaviest insects in the world. Each of these unique animals can found only in New Zealand. The word Mouteka in Maori means “weka island” named after the weka bird that populates the shores. And yes, they do have penguins too.

**Editor’s Comment: Mouteka is a small town with a population of 8300 on the South Island of New Zealand. An agricultural area, it has become popular in brewing circles for the hops they grow there.
