Lunching in the quaint harborside town of Burlington, and once again I find myself at Pepperwood for a high level meeting of the minds.* I don’t usually mix beer and business but when you are meeting with the creator and head honcho of Mining4Beer, it seemed to make more sense than I usually do. A “head to head” meeting so to speak.
In addition to a few Pepperwood creations on the draft menu, a brew by Four Fathers caught my eye. Having had only one father, who ruled the roost with a stern word and a belt that wasn’t used often but was used effectively, I find the concept of four fathers quite daunting. But the concept of Four Fathers beer is far less daunting since we are familiar with a few of their brews. Starting with The Starter, a beer that we felt was first string.
With a US election looming the name of the beer “It Takes a Village” reminded me of a book** by a former US Presidential first lady and then candidate. Of course, the name of the beer is not a democrat declaration, but in reference to the town of Hespler which has supported the brewery since its inception in 2015.
This village pours bright golden and clear with a bright white head. A perfect Pepperwood poured pint, to go with a great lunch by the way. Malt aroma, basic no frills lager on the nose. The taste is definitely malt not heavy but not floating away either. Bitters throughout, start to finish, with no lager sweet to speak of so I won’t mention it again. Solid basic lager, bitters in the body and the finish and lingering too. Some may say crisp but I think they crossed the crisp line with this one and entered bitter territory. As bitter as Hilary after the 2016 election? Maybe not quite that bitter.
