Hockey Night in Canada, and a Highlander Porter to help me cheer on my Leafs. It all starts with the pour and what can I say. It seemed to pour thick, perhaps substantial is a better descriptor. Nice tan head over black. Even DaVinci couldn’t have painted as pretty a pour.
A distinctive porter aroma and a hint of chocolate in the mix. The first swig had great mouth feel, smooth and silky, the chocolate was noticeable but not overbearing, with a bit of coffee in there too. A bit of smoke but no mirrors have me heading for the Highlands..
The notes of chocolate and coffee really struck a chord with me. But I think the real secret to this Porter’s success is that the chocolate, coffee and smoke never overpowered the brew. Great balance. Delicious from first quaff to last swig. Smooth beginning through to end, with no bitter. As mellow as I was after drinking one. This porter didn’t lift any bags but it did lift my spirits.
