Cruising the canal on the old V-Twin. Playing catch with the grandson. Searing steaks on the backyard BBQ, with the occasional flambe flank. As per the COMDB Guide to the Fine Art of BBQing we know that well done is well done. What’s missing from this seemingly idyllic Father’s Day? Lo and behold, my favourite son, a first time Father’s Day father himself, arrives with beer. Did I mention he was my favourite son? He has in hand an interesting selection from Counterpart Brewing, all unsampled suds.

But what kind of name is March of the Pigs? * What’s next, April of the Aardvarks? May of the Marmots? Or is this literally a porcine pint on parade? Here at COMDB we may march to the beat of a different drummer, but when it comes to beer what’s in a name is not nearly as important as what’s in our glass.

And what’s in my glass is a super hazy banana yellow orange pour. Thick white head adorned and adored, yes, it’s a pretty pint. A tropical citrus mango juicy hoppy aroma, Wakatu hops ** are in the house. The taste follows suit, mango tropical juicy with mild hoppy bitters on the finish. This hazy juicer gets a little funky as the bitters start to step up.  It has a full almost creamy mouthfeel. Eventually the grapefruit bitters start to take over for a slightly unbalanced sequence.

A full flavoured solid hazy IPA, with enough bitters to Wakatu you up.

*Editor’s Comment: “March of the Pigs” is a song by the band Nine Inch Nails from their 1993 album Downward Spiral. The song is a critique of conformity, and those who mindlessly follow the crowd. Counterpart also has a beer named “Black Hole Sun” which is a song by Soundgarden.

**Editor’s Comment: Wakatu Hops are a New Zealand variety that is used for its citrus flavouring but also for its bittering characteristics.
