Poco? Odd name for a beer. A tribute to a 70’s soft rock country band perhaps? An acronym of some sort, Pints of Crafty Origins? A short form name for John Smith’s saving grace? * None of these really seemed to make sense. Whatever Breakwall from POrt COlborne had in mind when they named this POrt COlborne brewski POCO I guess we’ll never know.

We’ll fix your pickle.
Speaking of Port Colborne, I’m in town getting a V-Twin tune-up, shout out to the MotorPickle team (Motto: we’ll fix your pickle). While in town, a site visit to Breakwall Brewing was in order. In order to do some day drinking that is. We have sampled a few Breakwall brews, we did some tomb raiding, Hopkins to be precise. Then Hip Hop Harvest wrapped up a super suds rating. And their Breakwall Blonde was a natural. All super suds status suds, can POCO join the team at the top? A pretzel and a pint and it’s tap and tell time.
I did have a chance to chat with the Dean of Brewing at Breakwall, that would be Dean. Passionate about his craft, and his crafts, and we ain’t talking about boats.
My impatient, getting frantic, always pedantic egghead Editor is wondering if there’s a brew review in here somewhere.
A dark for sure, not pitch black but as dark brown as you can get without going Darth Vader. Beauty bright white head, a pro pour. The aroma is mild malt with touch of cocoa, all subtle and inviting. First quaff is middlin’ malt followed by cocoa then a dry finish with a touch of dark chocolate bitters, very tasty. A light bodied dark, with the cocoa stepping up just a bit but still subtle. The finish smooths a little as well. Easy drinking, lots of flavour, well balanced. In short, ** it’s another Breakwall super suds winner.
It was all smooth sailing with this POrt COlborne craft, I just wish I could figure out where the name Poco came from.
*Editor’s Comment: The southern California soft rock country band Poco was formed in 1968 from the remnants of Buffalo Springfield. They originally wanted to call the band Pogo after the comic strip character but the comic creator Walt Kelly didn’t give permission and threatened to sue.
*Editor’s Comment: The Reviewer’s acronym example is a pointless outlandish crazy option.
*Editor’s Comment: According to legend when John Smith was captured by the Powhatan tribe, Pocahontas saved him from being executed by her Father, the chief. Most historians agree that John Smith’s telling of this story was exaggerated quite a bit. Also contrary to the Disney movie, there was no romance between Smith and Pocahontas, who was 11 year old at the time, thank goodness.
**Editor’s Comment: Too late to make a long story short.
