The Princess Wears Girl Pants

Sawdust City Brewing Co.

9% Alcohol

I don’t play favourites, but if I did Sawdust City would be in play. What makes a brewer great, in my humble opinion? Great beer, obviously. The COMDB guide to beer tasting tells us to pick a beer based on a funny name, and SC does that up in sevens and spades. Remember the trip we took to Uranus? How could you forget? I also like to see a touch of fearless in the beer glass, pulling a Star Trek and boldly going where no brewer has gone before. Case, or can, in point, The Princess Wears Girl Pants. Intriguing name. A hoppy Belgian Golden Ale, some experimentation going on here. At 9% its ABV is above and beyond V.

I’m always interested in the pint particulars, the behind the scenes, or as old Paul Harvey would say, “the rest of the story”. * According to SC the backstory of this brew is that “friends are important”. I’m not sure what that has to do with the gender specific wardrobe of the future Queen. Maybe this beer should be called “Captain Obvious Wears a Captain’s Cap”. But we all know it’s what’s in the can, not on the can, that counts. Time to stop thinkin’ and start drinkin’.

What a beauty pour. Without a doubt one of the prettiest golden pours out there. Bright golden and crystal clear, with a thick foamy head. This could be a pic on a brewer’s website, no photoshopping or cropping or whip cream topping required. Some hop juice on the nose to go with the bready malt. First taste is a wow, as in whoa wow. It is malt creamy with hops,  juice, and a big time boozy kick. Malt fruit booze in that order. The 9% is warping my brain. This brew is takin’ ass and kickin’ names.

At times the tasty combo of Belgian and hoppy shines through but it is all overshadowed by the booziness which only abates temporarily mid quaff. Maybe this beer should be called “Titanic Lifeboat” because they went overboard on this one.

There is some flavour to savour in their somewhere. The perfect pour couldn’t save this over achiever. I get the feeling this would be a great 6 or even 7 percenter, but nine is not so fine. I love Sawdust City, but this hopped up golden not so much.

*Editor’s Comment: Paul Harvey’s radio show “The Rest of the Story” premiered during World War 2 and ran until Harvey’s death in 2009. He would share an interesting factual account of an historical event, then at the end would introduce a twist, or a name, or another unexpected fact with his catch phrase “and now you know the rest of the story”.
