Pola Roja was quick work for the COMDB translation department, being the consummate professionals they are. Spanish for Red Pole they tell me. Based on the name I surmised, assumed, and mistakenly thought the town on the label may be a Spanish hamlet, not to be confused with a Spanish omelet. In turns out that the town on the label has nothing to do with Spain or an item on the local diner’s breakfast menu. It is in fact representative of the town of Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia and their picturesque three churches by the sea. Mahone Bay may be a pretty little place but what has it got to do with a red pole, Vienna or the rate of inflation? It just so happens that Storm Stayed teamed up with Salt Box on this beer of the month club selection. And they’s the boys that brews the beers out of Mahone Bay.* Mystery solved, other than the Spanish reference, the name red pole, or inflation.
This one pours a pretty penny copper bright and clear with a slim mist of white. It has a middlin’ malt aroma, not as malty as some of our past trips to Vienna. It tastes of full malt, with a watery mouthfeel and very sweet, sticky sweet, surprisingly sweet, astonishingly sweet. Certainly sweeter than some of our past trips to Vienna. A mild malt super sweet lager. Did I mention it’s sweet? Well it is. Nice flavour but too much honey in the comb.
