Jim Cuddy Red Harvest Ale

Fixed Gear Brewing Co.

5% Alcohol

I first saw Blue Rodeo in 91, I think it was in Sudbury. Great band, huge in Canada. But like many great Canadian bands they never got the international recognition they deserved.*  I think the music world could use a little more Canada too.

Enter Jim Cuddy Red Harvest Ale from fine fellows and femmes at Fixed Gear. What does a Canadian music icon ** have to do with this bicycling brewer? Well for me pedaling a two wheeler around is just a vicious cycle,  but apparently Jim Cuddy bikes Iike nobody’s business. He has a 100km per day habit, I don’t even do that on my V-twin!  As far as biking goes, which is not very far for me, I’m more interested in the beer in the can as opposed to a tired form of transportation. Time to Try this one and see if Cuddy and Fixed Gear are Lost Together or if I’m Head Over Heels for their harvest red.

This brew pours a dark ruddy ready red, almost a blackberry dark. It has a strong malt and dark berry aroma, wine like, which surprised me a bit. First taste is full mouthfeel full flavoured malty with some mild bitters on the finish. Initially I thought there was too much flavour here to be a big swigger. But the bitters faded and what evolved was a sweet smooth amber finish. The big swig test was so nice I did it twice.  A smooth, some would say slick finish.

This red isn’t my first Rodeo, but as far as reds go this righteous red is an A-list amber in my books. And Lord knows I love me an Amber.

*Editor’s Comment: Rush, The Tragically Hip, Heart, The Guess Who, April Wine, Steppenwolf, Barenaked Ladies, to name a few.

**Editor's Comment: High-school friends Jim Cuddy and Greg Keelor formed a few bands before they started Blue Rodeo in 1984. Since then the band has won every major award and recognition that a Canadian group can win in Canada. Jim Cuddy has established a solid solo career as well.
