JT may think rough stock is a Nasdaq loser, but Farmer Steve knows better. As for me, I’m no good at ropin’, ridin’ or romance but this ain’t my first rodeo. * Way back in the day I worked in Northern BC and there was a rodeo every weekend, complete with a beer tent and some boot scootin’ to boot. When that rough stock was in the chute those cowboys got ready for the worst six seconds of their lives, or the best 8 seconds. ** The very few who got saved by the bell could tend to their whiplash beaten bodies with the pride of victory which was usually worth a lot more than the purse.
The good ol’ boys and girls at Farmer’s Creed have offered up some Rough Stock of their own with their signature IPA. RA sampled their Longhorn Lager as a reward for doing his dog doody duty. Me, I’m far less deserving but just as eager to quaff FC’s rough stuff.
Unfortunately I had to wait. My pour became a Farmer’s foam fest, with that feisty froth piled higher than Fonger on April 20th. *** My patience grew razor thin, and then out came the Sundae spoon for some sudsy scooping. Once I was within two fingers of my beer the taste test commenced.
As noted previously this was a proud beer, head held high. An aroma of mild juice and hops fought its way through the dense fog. First taste was airy and juicy, tropical juicy fruit gum sweet, then to some mild malt. Not really hoppy at all, just a very subtle bitter finish. The juice is so sweet, the hops hardly there, the bitters barely bitter, not a balanced brew that’s for sure. The juicy stays start to finish, a touch of malt comes and goes, and the bitters never really show up.
We love the Farmer’s Creed. **** As for their IPA, it’s OK. But once past the foam fest, maybe a bit less sweet and a bit more hoppy would have made me a jolly rancher.
*Editor’s Comment: Corb Lund’s 2020 song “Ranchin’, Ridin’, Romance”. “Well, I’ve seldom met the man, Who could ranch and ride and romance, But two outta three ain’t bad.”
**Editor’s Comment: The eight second rule forms the basis of saddle bronc and bull riding in rodeo. The rider must stay mounted for the full eight seconds to qualify for a score.
***Editor’s Comment: 420 day, April 20th, is the day that pot smokers celebrate cannabis. Festivals, events and dispensary deals all occur on that day each year.
****Editor’s Comment: The Farmer’s Creed, adapted from Frank Mann: I believe a person’s greatest possession is their dignity and that no calling bestows this more abundantly than farming and ranching. Hard work and honest sweat are the building blocks of a person’s character. Farming, despite its hardships, is one of the most honourable ways a person can spend their days. My children are learning values that can be earned no other way. Many of the best things in life are free: the splendor of a sunrise, the rapture of wide open spaces, and the sight of your land greening each spring. True happiness comes in watching your crops ripen, your children grow tall, and your whole family feel pride in shared experience. By my toil I am giving more to the world than I am taking from it. My life will be measured by what I have done for others, and by this standard I fear no judgment. I believe in farming and ranching because they make all this possible.
