Rose City & Rocky Horror

Rose City Cream Ale

Way back in the day, as in school daze, the future Dr. B says “Wanta to go to Suds & Cinema? Rocky Horror is playing” to which I responded, “You had me at suds”. Please note this was long before Renée Zellweger turned “You had me at….” into a meme.* As far as The Rocky Horror Picture Show** goes, I’d never heard of it, but beer and popcorn sounded like a fine excuse not to hit the books and head over at the Frankenstein place.

Join us for the floor show.

Freak show for sure! People dressed up, rice and cards sailing through the air. The audience repeating every second line and singing along to every song. And cheap beer. By the time Tim Curry and Susan Sarandon started singing “Rose tint my world, Keep me safe from my trouble and pain”, I think the suds had already taken care of that. Back to present day and a bit of a stretch for a segue, but time to see if this Bridgewater Rose City*** cream ale will tint my world too.

A muted orange hazy pour with a bright white head, dammit Janet, it looks fine. A malt sweet aroma, not caramel but more of a lager sweet on the nose. The taste is malt caramel and fizz with a dry crisp finish. A full mouthfeel to it, maybe not dreamy creamy, but definitely a full pull. A nice mellow ale with malt front and center and a touch of bitters at the end. Bless my soul this sure was easy going down.

Bridgewater describes it as a “Lawnmower” beer, a cool down after some physical labour on a hot summer day brewski. It is equally as effective as a follow-up to physical inactivity while firmly ensconced in my lazy boy in front of the big screen brewski.

Not exactly a wild and an untamed thing, either me or the beer, but this is a nice easy drinking cream ale. I wouldn’t say my world was exactly tinted, or rocked for that matter, but it was no worse for wear. And it was a nice time warp to some hazy Rocky Horror memories.

*Editor’s Comment: In the 1996 movie Jerry MacGuire, Tom Cruise gives a long speech on why he wants to come back to her, and she responds “You had me at hello”. Cuba Gooding Junior also had the memorable line in the movie “show me the money”. Both lines come from Cameron Crowe, who wrote and directed the film, as well as other iconic films such as Almost Famous and Fast Times at Ridgemont High.

**Editor’s Comment: Originally The Rocky Horror Show, a musical by Richard O’Brien, The Rocky Horror Picture Show movie was released in 1975 to mixed, but mainly poor reviews. Once it began midnight showings it garnered a cult following and today is the longest running theatrical release in history.

***Editor’s Comment: There are many cities with the nickname Rose City, but Bridgewater is referring to the city of Welland, Canada on the Welland Canal which joins Lake Ontario to Lake Erie, bypassing Niagara Falls. The name was chosen in the early 1920’s because at the time the town was a hub for locally grown roses.
