My travels recently took me to Ottawa where I had a chance to drop in to Whiprsnapr Brewing Co. This is a cozy spot where the folks are clearly passionate about their beer and take pride in producing some very tasty bevies. The Fresh Hop Rye Pale Ale is a great sample of this. The Rye Pale Ale has a slightly smoky, pine flavour with a touch of bitterness and a refreshing, bright finish.
The brewery sources their hops and malts locally making for a distinctive freshness of flavour. The only thing I didn’t really get was any Rye flavour – either it is too subtle for my taste buds or the rye I’m used to drinking is not at the same caliber as this one. But the taste is outdoors with enough bitterness to make it really interesting.
They also have a Beermas Advent calendar – for the 12 days of drinking Christmas, which is an excellent idea. Why do the kids get to have all the fun in December?
I really enjoyed this beer and the brewery in general. Looks like it would be a great place to visit in the warmer months as they have a decent patio attached as well.
