Saluting the Major

Major Tom

Muskoka Brewery

Bowie 74, quaffing a few American brews while recording “Young Americans”.

Ah yes, good old Major Tom. I remember when the song Space Oddity came out on the radio, I thought it was a weird novelty song. I remember being at a house party a few years later and hearing his Ziggy Stardust album (back when people played albums at house parties) and thought that this Bowie fella is finally on to something. I don’t have a lightning bolt* tattooed across my face or anything, but I did become a fan. So I watched the recent documentary on Bowie’s career, “Moonage Daydream”. ** Spoiler alert, the movie sucks.  A few clips of old concerts with a bunch of avant garde artsy fartsy BS. “Moonage Nightmare” is perhaps a more apt moniker.

We have sampled a number of Muskoka’s Toms, Mad Tom, Twice as Mad, Hazed and Confused, Drifter, a pretty good line up for sure. But this one is Major Tom in more than name alone. At 8%, and 568ml this one brew equates to four (yes 4) Stonewalls. Bonus booze and mega mils. Just like Major Tom, I expected to be floating in a most peculiar way *** but I never really grasped the gravity of the situation.

A hazy golden orange with a bright bubbly head, an out of this world pour.  Aroma of fruit juice mild but pre-scent and accounted for. Very juicy, a bit of fizz and booze in the biz for a buzz, double bitters with the fruit aftertaste. A strong double with lots of juice. Even though this ABV and volume spells double trouble, so far my circuits aren’t dead and there is nothing wrong.*** The boozy backdrop starts to mellow in synch with my own mellowing. Coincidence? Of course not.  A strong juicy double and even as the boozy finish mellowed a bit the fruit stayed the course.

Beer is one of life’s small pleasures, but there is nothing small about this brew. If you are willing and able and prepared for double trouble you will enjoy it. It is a double in every way and them some.

*Editor’s Comment: Reference to Bowie’s 1973 album “Aladdin Sane”.

**Editor’s Comment: The 2022 movie “Moonage Daydream” is on Netflix. It was supported and approved by Bowie’s estate and has received great reviews and was shortlisted at the 2023 Academy Awards. The only negative review I have been able to find is by an unqualified cranky old man drinking beer.

***Editor’s Comment: Lyrics from the 1969 Bowie song “Space Oddity”, paraphrased, butchered or otherwise out of context but somewhat recognizable, nonetheless.
