This review will be short and sweet. Short as in angry and sweet because this brew was too damn sweet.

Out at The Grist with my wife for life for a tasty repast. The Goat, that traditional Bock mascot, * is the newest addition to the Grist list and my brew du jour. I’ve had some very tasty brews at The Grist, unfortunately this wasn’t one of them.

Clear dark toffee coloured and headless, it reflects a reddish glow. A lager sweet aroma, mild malt on the nose. First taste reveals a surprisingly too sweet lager body to malt with a borderline boozy bock kick. Sweet and strong, it’s too sweet from first swig til final swallow. The full malt bock flavour can’t quite breakthrough all the sweetness.

So sweet that I think something went awry in the brewing process. In short, too sweet. If only it wasn’t so sweet, that would be sweet. Maybe this beer is The Goat, but it’s definitely not the G.O.A.T.

*Editor’s Comment: Here’s the story of goats and beer. Bock beer originated in Northern Germany as far back as the 1400’s. By the 1600s it was being brewed in the Munich area and there the name “Einbeck” was pronounced as “Einbock” in the accent of the region which roughly translates to “billy goat” in German. So the goat/beer relationship is a visual pun, basically a dad joke* from the 1600’s.
