Lock Street Brewery

Another classic swimsuit by the seaside.

A sour wheat beer, this could well be the worst of both worlds. But it’s a Lock Street brew, of Dalhousie docks fame. The proud purveyor of Portside Pilsner, the seaside supplier of Seafarer Scottish suds and the bayside brewer of Black Sail. A great brewer taking on a Berliner Weisse, the German wheat beer whose claim to fame is the original sour. Will this one sink or swim. Make a splash or take a dive. Rise to the top or be a bottom feeder. A pinch of the nose and it’s time to taste and tell.

A light yellow wheatish pour, lighter than the pic would lead one to believe, almost lemonesque in it’s luminescence. The north border under attack from Carbon nation. Yep, lots of head in the glass and a little in the can to spare. I’m ready but it’s heady. An aroma of malt and hay, grainy. It is very very fizzy, too fizzy to be bubbly. Champagne busy fizzy. First swig yields a sharp malt grain. Not quite sour but you know it’s a sour if you know what I mean. Then after the sharp has made it’s point it starts to taper off into a sour disposition, which is not actually sour but tart. A touch of citrus in there somewhere. A tart very fizzy wheat sour. The fizz actually abated close to the finish line and made for a more approachable sour.

I think Lock Street has done a good job on this classic Berliner Weisse. Not my go to brew,* but credit given where credit’s due.

*Editor’s Comment: This may not be your go to brew, but sour is your go to disposition.
