Captaining a space craft
Jupiter, Roman God of the sky, a lofty position to be sure. Overseeing the Romans, literally. Of course, Paniza’s first love isn’t Roman history, it’s good beer. But their second love isn’t Roman history either, it’s outer space. Beer Trek. The final frontier. To boldly brew where no one has brewed before. * Our Canadian countryman Captain Kirk, aka Bill Shatner has been known to quaff a brew of two in his day, and who can blame him.**
We enjoyed our last other worldly voyage with Paniza to Mars. This time we venture a bit further a field to Jupiter, the 5th planet from the Sun and the largest by far.*** Will we send this beer into orbit, or to its obit? Countdown to quaff off.
This space craft has a golden down to earth pour considering the gravity of the situation. A malt bread like aroma, reminiscent of a cream ale. It has a malt forward full bread body, a very smooth operator. A lagerlike rather than crisp finish to start with, even a bit of the old lager sweet in there. It does have a bit of a dry aftertaste, perhaps trying to work its way up to crisp. It evolves a bit into a mild malt with just a touch of crisp and dry easy going, and easy going down, finish. Hey pils, your lager is showing!
I really enjoyed this award winning smooth flavourful German pilsner.*** Paniza hit this one out of the park, lucky for me you don’t have to go into orbit to drink a beer that’s out of this world.
*Editor’s Comment: The phrase “…to boldly go where no man has gone before!” was part of the introduction to the original Star Trek series. For “Star Trek: The Next Generation” the intro was revised to “where no one has gone before”. Interestingly enough the phrase was altered prompted by criticism from aliens regarding of the crew’s human-centrism. Origins of the saying go back to the 1500’s but the modern version associated with space comes from the science fiction writings of H.P. Lovecraft in the 1940’s. The phrase was used in a book put out by the US government in 1958 to gain support for the space program.
**Editor’s Comment: William Shatner was born in Montreal and rose to fame as the captain of the Starship Enterprise on the 1966 to 69 TV show “Star Trek”. In 2021 at the age of 90 years he became the oldest person to ever travel into space. Shatner enjoys beer and has been a celebrity judge at The Canadian Brewing Awards.
***Editor’s Comment: Jupiter is the oldest planet and has a mass that is 2.5 times all of the other planets combined. Due to its ize and gravitational pull it has at least 95 moons. Although Saturn is known for it’s rings, Jupiter also has a ring system consisting mainly of dust.
****Jupiter won a Gold Medal at the 2024 Canadian Brewing Awards and the Ontario Brewing Awards as well.
