Spark House

Lake of Bays Brewing Co.

5% Alcohol

According to LoB, “in the heart of the forest the Spark House* stands alone”. I assume they are making reference to the unique nature of this red.

It poured deep dark red, not at all hazy or bubbly. A ribbon of a white head. An aroma that seemed to be malt forward with a bit of chocolate in the background, but overall not very agressive.  First swig had a nice mouthfeel, ok flavour, a bit of a bitter aftertaste but it smoothed out. Any first swig bitters were gone by the second quaff. Good flavour, not overpowering, the presence of chocolate malt doesn’t create a strong chocolate taste but instead subtle notes and makes for a smooth ale. The smooth and easy drinking nature encouraged me to take big swigs and the next thing I knew I was out of the woods, and the red,  and pining for another one.

Easy drinking red with a nice flavour to it.  This red is the real thing.

Editor’s Comment: Another name for fire watch towers or fire towers. At one time as many as 325 towers dotted the landscape of Ontario. Today approximately 156 towers are still standing but only a handful are in use. The book Desolation Angels by Jack Kerouac of “On the Road” fame was semi-autobiographical and partly based on a summer he spent as a fire lookout living in a “Spark House” on Desolation Peak in Washington State.
