I Shall Have My Revenge

I heard about this hotel that hands you a beer with your room key, so of course I had to check in to it. And sure enough I was handed a nice chilly bottle of Dos Equis Especial Lager por favor and mucho gracias. Brewed since 1897 from the Montezuma Brewery*. They even have a picture of old Montezuma on the bottle. It looks like he is planning his revenge, or maybe suffering from it himself.

So I am in a bit of a pickle here, as they say. I was travelling and unable to reach the COMDB translation department to assist with this brew, but we all know the review must go on. I know that “Dos Equis” is Spanish but that is as far as I got. The graphic on the bottle (other than old Monty Zuma) is XX** and I think that is a bit of a hint. “Dos Equis” … “Two X’s”, I think they are somehow related and yet I couldn’t quite put two and two together. I guess we do need the translation department after all.

Stay Thirsty My Friends

Having a Dos Equis with the most interesting man in the world ***would be quite interesting, unfortunately he hasn’t returned from his one way journey to Mars yet. But maybe someday.

As is often the case when travelling I have worked up a bit of a thirst. So it is full throttle and out of the bottle with this one. Quenching thirst first and asking questions later.

This Dos Equis Especial Lager is a light malt flavour easy drinking lager, not like a traditional corn based Mexican lager. No lime required. It is very light in taste and ABV with a nice mild flavour. A smooth finish with no bitters or hops. A nice hot day thirst quencher, definitely crushable.

*Editor’s Comment: In 2010, Heineken bought Mexican brewery FEMSA Cerveza, including brands Tecate, Sol, Dos Equis, Indio and Kloster.

**Editor’s Comment: In 1897 master brewer Wilhelm Hasse first brews Siglo XX, the beer today known as Dos Equis Ambar. He named the beer XX to usher in the upcoming 20th century with the Roman numeral “XX” signifying 20.

***Editor’s Comment: The Most Interesting Man in the World advertising campaign for Dos Equis ran from 2006 to 2018. The campaign was very successful and in 2009 Dos Equis was declared the “fastest-growing import in the U.S.” The commercials became a social phenomenon with the catch phrase “I usually don’t drink beer, but when I do I prefer Dos Equis.” He finished each ad with the catch phrase “Stay Thirsty My Friends”. Some of his more outrageous claims included; giving his own father "the talk", experiencing an awkward moment just to know how it felt, and finding the Fountain of Youth but not drinking from it, "because he wasn't thirsty". Other feats included parallel-parking a train, and slamming a revolving door. The original most interesting man in the world, actor Jonathan Goldsmith, retired from the campaign in 2016 by announcing his one-way journey to Mars while stating his only regret was not knowing what regret felt like.
